Victor F. Weisskopf was born in Berlin on June 23, 1916. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1938 and spent two years at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Physics before fleeing to England and joining the British Admiralty's secret weapons division
In charge of developing new radar systems during World War II, he worked on the early radar telephone system and the Wurzburg radio guidance system for V-1 buzz bombs. After the war he became professor of physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and helped establish the MIT Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS). He joined MIT faculty in 1963 and was named professor emeritus upon his retirement in 1987.
